Criminal Justice Crusaders

Help me give my students a book that will be the jumpstart of a social justice project-based learning activity. We will read Monster and then study the American criminal justice system.

My Project

My students are going to embark on a project-based learning endeavor. We will start out reading the book Monster by Walter Dean Myers. Monster chronicles the experience of a 17-year-old boy, Stephen, who may or may not have committed a murder. "He decides to look through the court system and jail time as if it were a movie, and as if everyone saw him for what he truly was."

Upon reading the experience of a young man in jail, I hope to foster conversation about the American criminal justice system.

I hope students will take on the challenge and research our system with it's flaws and advantages. They will learn about biases against prisioners and convicted felons in and out of the system, but also learn about the ways the system tries to aid those who have been disadvantaged. They will write up proposals about ways that we can change our system.

My students are at the age in which they are ready to see beyond themselves and see the world for what it is. They are ready to think critically about their place in the world and see what they can do to make it better.
