This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 25 kindergarten students are eager to learn and enjoy stories read to them and in need of having technology readily available to them. They come from a low socioeconomic background and in most cases come from homes where parents do not read to them, or do not have the means to access technology. My students live in an impoverished community in East Los Angeles. My students are from predominantly Latino backgrounds. They range from newly arrived immigrants to third generation immigrants. I have two students that face homelessness as well. The students that I work with are receiving free school lunches. Despite the challenges my students face, they are happy children who want to learn.
My Project
My request is for a Cricut machine to use in my classroom for several purposes. I can use the Cricut to make individualized flash cards with high frequency words, writing prompts for my kindergarteners, bulletin boards, and art projects with my students. I would use cartridges to print the alphabet letters in a variety of sizes for my students.
I can also use the images on Cricut to print images to post on my alphabet word wall.
These letters and pictures would be used by my beginning readers and writers for hands-on literacy teacher made games and activities. The Cricut will save me a lot of my prepping time, since I would not have to print and cut everything by hand. The use of a Cricut machine would allow me more time to focus on teaching than prepping materials for my daily instruction. My students would also use the cricut to publish their science, math, and writing journals, and be able to personalize them.
