Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an inner-city, special education science teacher in New Jersey. I have an amazing group of students with special needs such as behavioral disorders and learning disabilities. My students learn best with hands-on activities! Unfortunately, our school district is suffering because of budgetary constraints. This has caused the district to cut back on almost everything.

Do you love animals? How about a hissing cockroach, a small boa or a tarantula? Well, then you will love my class! Over my thirteen years of teaching, I have found that my students learn best when they can connect to something. That "something" are our classroom pets! My students suffer from many emotional and social disabilities. Establishing a connection to these animals have allowed my students to love something unconditionally. Students who are often a challenge in other classrooms, are perfectly content and well behaved in my room because of these animals. They have a certain calmness about them even upon entering the room. With this connection, they have learned responsibility, how to care for certain animals, how to create and maintain habitats and so much more!

In November of 2006, we had a very unfortunate incident happen. The heat in our school was turned on. There are only two degrees, ON and OFF. The outside temperature was 70 degrees. The temperature of the room reached 104 degrees. Within 24 hours all the animals suffocated and died. It was my most challenging moment in my career as a teacher. How do I explain this incident to my students? The school apologized for the incident, but did nothing to replace the animals or to find a way to prevent the incident from happening again. For six years, I was financially supporting the classroom. This included purchasing the animals, purchasing everything to meet their needs, vet bills, cages, tanks...everything. Our school district could not afford such an endeavor and I was willing to do it. It was so important for my students.

How do I make sure this NEVER happens again? For two years, my students have been begging me to start our "zoo" again. I have seen the decline in their behaviors over the past two years...they need this! However, I cannot take on the responsibility of caring for these animals without making sure the temperature can be regulated. In order to do this, we need air conditioners. Not so much for the summer months, but for the winter when the school's heating system is turned on.
