My students need live insects (like butterflies, beetles, ants and silkworms) and containers to study life cycles.

My Students
Explore! Investigate! Discover! This is the motto in our Kindergarten classroom. Children need opportunities to interact with the world around them so that they may experience first hand the beauty of nature and the wonders of life. Watching amazing insects grow and interact provide just that!
Coming into work every day is not like working at all!
We have the pleasure of working with 64 four and five year olds who demonstrate what life should be like...adventurous, exciting and full of wonder. We teach in Northern California in a school district that is strapped for cash. We are provided with limited resources by our fabulous PTA but after purchasing basic Kindergarten necessities such as crayons, paper and glue, we are not left with much. Many of the parents of our children are working so hard just to put food on the table that they do not have the time to take their children to parks, public gardens or museums. This is why we like to provide meaningful educational experiences through science for our children.
My Project
Have you ever seen a Painted Lady emerge from her chrysalis and spread her wings for the first time? Have you ever felt the silky white skin of a silkworm or heard a hundred ants steadily tunneling their way through sand? Now imagine 64 kindergarteners witnessing these miracles for the first time! Just to see the looks of sheer awe and concentration make our day! By purchasing these live insects (silkworms, butterflies, ants, praying mantis eggs, ladybugs and beetles) and their habitats we will be able to more effectively teach the concepts of life cycles and insects' interaction with the environment. Our students will learn how insects help our environment, what they eat and how they live. This is an experience that will never be forgotten!
The Chevron Classroom Challenge has inspired us with this opportunity for our students!
We are excited to "unveil" the insects and their habitats to our students. Although the insects will eventually be set free, we will use the habitats year after year in the classroom. Hands on learning experiences are crucial in Kindergarten. Children learn much more when they are able to use all their senses. This is a lesson that the children will carry with them throughout their lives!
