My Students

Our classroom library is a buffet that my students love serving themselves from every day. Some grab a few; mixing and matching genres that will send them on journeys to the past or the unknown. Others are loyal, choosing their favorite author or genre every time. Either way, they've become readers!

My students are a wonderful cast of characters!

They each bring a unique perspective to our classroom, sharing ideas with thoughtfulness and an eye for innovation. Our school has fostered an environment that encourages our students to set goals, and find traditional and creative pathways to achieving them. To that end, we provide choices for our students, and in our reading class, it has created a community of readers, writers, and learners.

My Project

Over the course of the year, my students have developed an interest in reading that has reached many genres. However, they also became aware that there are many genres they haven't been exposed to. Areas that my students have indicated that they would most like to explore are science fantasy and horror. In their experience, these genres are often overlooked or seen as less rigorous than other genres. Through research, they decided that this book is an example of literature that has literary and entertainment value, and they are ready to explore it. In addition to reading, analyzing, and evaluating the book, they are interested in learning more about the United Kingdom, the novel's setting, and in seeing the movie version later on this year.

I believe that being well-read is more than just having experienced the classics.

As developing readers, I want them to have an approach to literature that helps them to think critically about what they read and be open to stepping outside of the box. Books like this do that. In my classroom, they will challenge students to give different books a chance; to challenge their own limitations and preconceptions. Who knows? Maybe the next Stephen King is among my students!
