My Students

We are a diverse, Title I, school with 50% of students bused in from neighborhoods disproportionately affected with economic challenges. They commute here from other parts of our county, sometimes from very far away, which requires them to often get up long before sunrise, and they do it, every day! While this can be a disadvantage to academic success, the families are often very supportive and encouraging. They are a very diverse group who seem to have a very strong sense of being part of a global community. They are reflective, open-minded, risk takers, caregivers, balanced, knowledgeable, principled, inquirers, thinkers, and communicators, and most importantly, a fantastic representation of what the future holds. The rest of the population is composed of neighborhood kids that have known each other their whole lives, and are equal players in our global community of learners.

My appreciation grows every day as they forge together to overcome barriers, work to succeed, and to bring out the talents of each individual.

The differences are less important than the commonalities. All are proud participants in the broader school culture.

This is an amazing opportunity to modify my classroom to better meet student needs.

My Project

Our school is located between a creek and a salt marsh along a human reconstructed bay. It puts our school directly in the path of dealing with urban runoff, sea level rise and city debates about the future of the land and water around us. Decisions regarding the restructuring of the area will ultimately affect our school. These students have been asked what they would like to see happen in the area and what might benefit them, especially from an environmental and sustainable future looking standpoint.

For students to be able to voice their opinions, thoughts and ideas to city planners and organizations about the future development of the bay area nearby they need a strong foundation in environmental science and urban planning, including data and evidence that they have gathered around the area through investigations that they decided are beneficial for overall understanding of the plans' impacts.

To accomplish this students need a variety of testing supplies for water and soil quality in order to develop the investigations to gather data to explain the impacts that the current plan is having on these local ecosystems, and the impact that the health of the local ecosystems have our our school. Providing each lab station group with a whole kit of materials to get into the creek and marsh and to test the variables that they feel are going to further their knowledge the most is the ultimate goal.

Students will then use their learning to present their work and their ideas for what for how this area should be restructured at local city council meetings, planning boards and to the community. Collecting their own data based on their own tests will elevate the students into leadership roles of educating their local community on importance of these ecosystems.
