My students need real life experiences to connect to living organisms and observe changes over time. That is why I have asked for the river tank plant set, animal set, and other accessory to provide my students with these experiences.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine inner city students looking forward each morning to seeing lizards, frogs, and plants in a river habitat aquarium. This hands-on experience would create a new understanding in science and new connections for all readers, especially struggling ones.
We are in a public school (K-5th grades) in a large city.
The students live in crowded situations and most are on free lunch. Opportunities to examine nature are thrilling, informative, and comforting to them. My class of 2nd graders need opportunities to observe and record observations of a living habitat over time. This may be the first aquarium and the nearest "river" they examine for a long time!
My Project
With this River Tank Ecosystem, students will see an ecologically balanced design. Continuously flowing water provides an oxygen-rich environment for aquatic organisms, whose waste products provide nutrients for terrestrial plants. This is an ideal home for fish, newts, lizards, and frogs. I have asked for the plant set, animal set, and the accessory set for the gravel and other items necessary to run the tank, as well as food to provide nourishment for the animals all year. My students will be motivated to learn all they can about the live creatures in the habitat. They will make text-to-world connections as well as text-to-text, as many of our readings include descriptions of indoor habitats. When a student has had a rough night at home, they will be comforted by the soothing water sounds and gentle animals.
You will be investing in our country's riches resource our children.
When they learn to care and be accountable for this river habitat, they will be less likely to drop out of school or commit the acts of violence, which are around them every day. You will be contributing peace!
