My school is located in Staten Island, NY. It has a large minority population from predominantly low-income families. Our students face the challenges of poverty, high crime rates, adult illiteracy, transience and single parent families. Low literacy achievement has predominated in our environment. I am a general education teacher in the primary grades where many supplies and comforts are lacking. We have adopted a balanced literacy approach to teaching reading and are in need of many items to give our children the best we can. I am asking for a carpet for my students to sit on when we meet at our "Meeting Area " to learn and share. This carpet would provide a comfortable place to learn with room enough for all.
