My diverse class of 5 and 6 year old kindergarten students arrives each morning eager to learn and share with each other. They will spend this school year with me exploring new ideas and making discoveries.
We are a Title One elementary Boston public school catering to children in the Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan neighborhoods.
There are currently 22 children in my kindergarten classroom who love to play, draw, write, count, observe, and learn together! Our students may not rely on many resources from their homes, but they have much to bring to our class!
Materials such as the weighted tactile beanbags or the weighted pocket scarfs will help students in my classroom who are struggling with sensory issues. These students are noticeably more engaged in classroom activities and less disruptive when they have a choice of classroom items that will provide deep pressure stimulation that has a calming effect.
Students will use these items around their necks or on their laps to apply gentle pressure that will help decrease stereotypical behaviors.
The portable CD player with earbuds will help struggling writers in the classroom with noise reduction and improve focus by offering them the tools they need to boost confidence.
