Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at the tip of Texas, bordering Mexico, where my students speak Spanglish. They face many challenges such as dyslexia, special needs, and socioeconomic disadvantages, but that doesn't stop them from dreaming big. They are determined, hard-working children who are willing to learn no matter their circumstances.
I teach second-grade bilingual students who inspire me on a daily basis.
These students come every day excited to start class. They enjoy hands-on activities, crafts, group activities, and, especially, working with technology. They face many challenges, but they don't let these challenges take over their learning experience.
I work at a very supportive school where students come first. We are all about meeting our children's needs. Our administrators have created a safe, happy environment for everyone at our school: students, staff, teachers, and parents. I love working at the very tip of Texas where my students are very unique and wonderful.
My Project
My students will be able to enhance their learning experience through the use of a Cricut machine. This device allows students to expand their creativity. For example, after reading a novel, they will be able to create a character analysis, draw it on the classroom laptop, and then use them to create a 3D figure. After each student creates their character, they can display them in the library and invite the community to see them. They will also have the opportunity to justify their creation.
Students will also use this device to make real-world connections in mathematics.
For instance, they will apply their financial literacy skills by creating a classroom economy. This will allow students to earn class-created money. They will be able to earn, save, and spend accordingly. Everything will be designed and cut using the Silhouette program provided by the device. When studying three-dimensional figures, students can draw the faces of a figure on the laptop, use the machine to cut it, and then connect it onto a 3D figure. Students will then display them in the school hall.
In science, after studying habitats, students will create a mural showing the different habitats they learned about.
