Our close-knit, Title I school is located in a beautiful country setting. The students are energetic, curious, and work hard. The parents are positive and the community is a great resource of support.
The students come to school each day to learn so that they can be positive and helping participants in society.
The students work together to support one another both in the school and outside of the school day. Whenever a need arises in the community, our students are always there to lend a helping hand. Therefore, when we can help to pay it forward to the students, we jump at the opportunity.
My Project
The project that inspired me to write this project was, "If We Build Up Girls, Then We All Become STEMinists." This project promotes a career path into science for girls with fashion and art. There are so many STEM opportunities out in the world that combine art interests with science. Introducing students to these jobs helps to open their minds to a field they may have never considered.
The first IF/Then resource I will show the students is a video by Amand Hodo on being a marine biologist.
Amanda talks about working with sea animals and what her job entails. Not only is it about working with marine life, but also sharing information and informing others about marine life and its importance. The second IF/Then video students will watch is, Human Cell Images Turned into Fashion Pieces with Molecular Biologist Beata Mierzwa." This video allows girls and boys to see that you can take a STEM topic of interest to you and turn it into an artistic creation. Through molecular biology or marine biology, you can work in a field that inspires you and promote it to the world through art.
With the t-shirts, bags, paper, tips, and blade tools, and vinyl students will be creating a brochure, card, bag, or t-shirt to help promote a STEM career. Our classroom currently has a cricut, but not the tools. Students will learn about helping marine life and create cards to send to others or a t-shirt that shows how we all can help to preserve our marine life. Or students can look at what a molecular biologist does and create art projects promoting awareness about how we can help to fight or support a specific illness. Students will learn a career in STEM while being artists.
