Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, caring, empathetic children who are curious about the world around them and love getting the opportunity to participate in hands on projects. Over the time I see them, they build solar ovens, they design and test hot and cold packs, and they all develop a science fair project. As a relatively new school (only 5 years old!) with mostly new teachers, giving students the materials they need to fully engage in the learning experience can be difficult.
The students at my school face many hardships, but they always come to school excited and ready to learn something new about the world they live in.
I am constantly motivated by their drive to learn more and be more involved in the world around them. Many of them are artists, athletes, musicians, or involved in other hobbies. I would love to be able to provide more ways for them to bring their own experiences and knowledge into the classroom.
My Project
At our school, we have a huge number of students who are English learners. Our hope is that by incorporating art into science lessons we can give more students access to the content and allow more students to feel comfortable and confident adding their own ideas and thoughts to group projects.
Using art in science is a powerful motivator for students to fully engage with the content.
It also encourages students to spend more time on the work that they are doing, which is something most middle schoolers struggle with. Through various projects, such as a comic strip about traits and natural selection, giant-size representations of cells, and force diagrams of an asteroid, students are able to use multiple ways of thinking, which increases their comprehension.
