Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a special education preschool class in a low income area. My student's ages range from 3 years old to 5. Their disabilities include speech and language, intellectual, Autism, etc. Many of them not only have a disability, they are also English language learners.
They all love to learn although they need materials that are hands on and interactive.
My philosophy is that my job is to increase students language skills, social skills, and classroom readiness. It is important to me that my students are fully prepared to go on in their education.
My Project
Imaginative play is an important aspect of growing and learning as a child. Kids learn about life and who they could become when they are trying on different costumes and pretending to be someone else.
It is important to me to teach my students how to use their imaginations and encourage them to explore the world around them.
Being that my students have different types of disabilities, they may not all know how to play appropriately and using an imagination may be foreign to them. These materials, costumes, dolls, dishes, food, etc. will be a great way to help them understand how to play and give them ideas of who they can become.
These items will be consistently available to them during free play times. Teachers will work with the students as to how to use the materials appropriately and encourage them to try new things.
I am excited to give this opportunity to my students. I want them to learn how to play together to increase their likelihood of success in the future.
