My school is very diverse with over 950 students. Over 30% of our 4th and 5th graders qualify for gifted services. As a gifted education teacher, my main job is to constantly engage my students and foster their natural curiosity and inquisitive nature.
Their eyes light up when they walk in my room and see supplies set out for a hands-on investigation!
They love to build and try new ideas to solve a science or engineering problem. My students crave a challenging curriculum. They learn best by exploring with science tools and materials so they can better understand the science standards that I am teaching.
This project is all about combining the fun, engaging aspect of LEGO building with the more challenging aspect of using robotics and programming to solve a STEM challenge.
LEGO WeDo sets allow students to practice skills that real engineers face: designing, programming and trouble-shooting with the robots.
These skills are essential in science and engineering careers and give students a taste of what future careers might be.
My school district has designed a series of lessons using the WeDo kits that combine science, technology and engineering skills. I would love to get these sets so my students can participate in these activities and build essential skills in persevering through a challenging task, programming a robot, working with a team to solve a problem and having fun in the process.
