This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach biology at a school with a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, there is a huge diversity among the student population. My students warmly embrace that diversity and are constantly working toward making their community a better place to learn. Their desire to work together, to cultivate a classroom in which everyone is accepted is inspiring and gives me hope that these are the students who will one day change the world we live in. They are constantly pushing me not just to be a better teacher, but a better person, one whom they will be proud to call their teacher.
My students are the greatest reflections of the kind of person I want to be.
In the face of desperate circumstances and odds stacked against them, they continue to fight for what they believe in. They take a stand when they see injustice, and hold on to the belief that if enough people stand up, they just might make a difference. It is my goal to give them the tools and the support to make that difference, and to be the teacher that sees the endless potential in each of my students.
My Project
What comes to mind when you think of your high school science class? Microscopes? Lab equipment? Dull lectures and feverish note-taking? If so, you're not alone. We've all experienced a class where it seemed like teachers just don't get it, and have no interest in what we as the students are experiencing. That is why I am starting this project, to give students an opportunity to showcase their personalities, their stories, and their experiences with science in a way unique to THEM.
These tools will give students the ability to design their own stickers, t-shirts, tote bags, and other items with designs relating to their biology class.
These resources will additionally be used throughout the year that raise funds to fight global climate shift. As a science educator, I often get questions about, "What can we do?" from students watching the global climate crisis and feeling powerless to help. With these resources I hope to give students some agency, some power, and a creative outlet to express their concern with the global crisis. These resources will be used to raise awareness around the subject of climate change, and to inform our school community of opportunities they have to make a difference.
