Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Located in the southern part of Miami-Dade, you will find this small charter school filled with promise and vision. You will meet our students, mostly of hispanic background, that have dreams and visions of their own. You will meet their teachers, that go above and beyond, to make sure the education they are receiving lives up to their dream's potential. This is my school.
When you first step foot into my classroom, you will see a lively group of five year olds; some with excitement in their eyes, others wary of this thing called "school." Why wary?, you may ask.
A large number of my students do not speak English as their first language. With language as a barrier, many of these students feel emotionally, socially, and intellectually inferior to their peers. What should be a fun, enriching day in kindergarten, quickly becomes a day filled with anxiety and stress. My job is to help these student feel superior and worthy of their education.
My Project
As a general education teacher, it is so easy to get caught up in the pressure of making sure your students can read, write, apply, understand, that we forget to make enough room for creative thinking and expression.
Albert Einstein said "Creativity is intelligence having fun," and I firmly believe that.
The multicultural crayons, beads, and easel are different tools my students can use when participating in arts and crafts. The laminating machine, pouches, and easel with pocket charts can also be used to display and protect their work once finished.
The beauty of this project is that these resources can be used across other subjects areas, too. I am so thrilled at the possibility of providing my students with the supplies needed for them to grow creatively and intellectually.
