Creativity is Endless, Even in an Art Room without a Sink!
My students need 30 aprons to protect from paint, 5 books on master artists, plaster strips for sculptures, an organizer for paper, and an iPad for visual learners.
The impact art can have on the children in my school is endless, even in an art room without a sink! I want to give my students an opportunities and experiences.
This is my first year teaching and I am striving to establish an environment in my art room where negativity is left at the door before walking in.
I have decorated my room from head to toe and am building my own curriculum based on big ideas. My students are constantly facing obstacles at home and in school, which is why I am trying to have them working more collaboratively together. The fights and bickering leads me to constantly telling my students that they are not one anther's enemies. I came into teaching with big ideas, and am slowly realizing that the students need positive role models and life skills, more so than math and reading. The students in my school need to feel loved above any other lesson. Some days I cry for them, some days I push them, some days I feel like I am not cut out for this job. I know the students in my school have the potential to do great things, they just need a teacher who believes in them and the resources to build experiences.
My Project
30 aprons to protect from paint, 5 books on master artists, plaster strips for sculptures, an organizer for paper, and an iPad for visual learners.
Because we do not have a sink in the art room, the smocks are so valuable. The students in my school wear uniforms and parents are not happy when one of their uniforms gets dirty. Instead of teaching students the important responsibility of cleaning up after themselves, I am forced to clean all supplies in a bucket of water and buy the children wipes to clean their hands.
The library in my school is not organized. Books are thrown on the shelves. I teach young children ages 3-9 and book are so important to art lessons. It's my job as a teacher to incorporate literature and common core learning, but without books it is difficult. Without a computer or smart board I can not even pull up the Internet to show students the work of art masters, or even view everyday examples of modern art.
The iPad could be hooked up to a projector for visuals or used as a camera to take photos of student work/create stop action animation videos with smaller classes.
This project will help me introduce my children to new experiences that would not be possible otherwise.
I want to provide my students with the best education I can possibly give them. It starts by giving them opportunity; the opportunity to paint without ruining their clothes, the opportunity to see the work of artistic masters, and the opportunity to use materials they don't have at home. The art room is a place for expression and safety that these students may not find anywhere else.
