My Students

The adolescents in our program work together each year to create hand-made items and tasty food to sell at their twice-yearly market. They take pride in choosing projects, in teaching one another new skills, in preparing for the event and creating a stir around our school!

Being a part of an economic system gives them the opportunity to experience a taste of adult life.

The planning, shopping, preparing of food is always a hit, as well as the crafts they create through the year.

With the funds, they do two things: they research and convince their class to donate to a particular organization 10% of their revenue. Then, at the end of the year, they plan and enjoy a camping trip.

My Project

Normally, students would choose projects from materials in our classroom, but we are starting off the year "online" so I wanted to offer a new skill that could be packaged up and sent home. These supplies--the specially cut paper and the quilling tools--can be offered to each student in a supply package.

Paper Quilling is an ancient art and can be adapted to many art styles.

It is easily portable and doesn't take up much space, making It an ideal project to work on from home.

Most importantly, it is a new form and will be a breath of fresh air in this uncertain time. The opportunity to create is essential!
