Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are special because they come from many countries and cultures, yet they blend together in a peaceful and wonderful way. Despite economic and other challenges, these children are enthusiastic, hungry for knowledge, polite, loving, and hardworking every day of the year.

Our school is in a very diverse neighborhood, and our students embrace the many different cultures and languages of their classmates.

Although our school is in a high poverty neighborhood, our students come to us with a wealth of gifts to share.

My Project

Our community was hit very hard by Covid19 and our students will be returning to school after many months without the structure and learning experiences they really need. They will be excited to return, but school will look and feel different to our students with all the restrictions we must comply with. All carpets, flexible seating, classroom libraries, shared materials and art supplies, toys and games have been removed from our rooms. Children are not going to have the freedom of movement they are accustomed to as they must stay in one room all day even for lunch and specials like art or music. These are not ideal circumstances especially for our children with special needs and we want to create the best possible classrooms we can to make their adjustment easier for them.

We are going to give every student in three classrooms their own plastic bag with art supplies and these beautiful sketchbooks so they can relax, express themselves and have an outlet for their feelings.

This will greatly help all of our children especially those who have anxiety or difficulty concentrating or processing the changes in the environment around them. It will also be very helpful for our English language learners to create their own stories or artwork so they can show their talents and feelings.

Each day, we will give our students a few minutes of down time at their desks to unwind and relax by drawing, coloring or writing their own books. This will be an unstructured activity allowing our kids to unwind and be able to cope with the new routines they are expected to comply with. Having a few minutes a day to themselves will make a world of difference in their behavior and ability to concentrate on their subjects.
