Creativity and Problem Solving:Imagining the Future Though Magna Tiles

My students need these Magna Tile sets so they can expand their imagination; building structures that let them see the future can be created by them through problem solving and creativity.

My Students

"We can't wait to be back!" was a quote I heard more than once this summer. As an art teacher in a low-income/high poverty school , my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many being raised by grandparents.

Despite the many challenges they face, my students are creative and enthusiastic to learn.

These circumstances that are beyond their control limit them from experiencing life experiences many of us see as "typical". In my classroom they are able to experience where art might take them. Drawing, painting and creating in 3 dimensions as well as learning about artists, many of which had circumstances that they can relate to, all contribute to an art program that encourages thinking and problem solving, explores diversity and excites the students.

My Project

My students will use these Magna Tiles to envision homes and buildings in a way that paper and pencil can not. Many of my students come from apartments, small homes and sometimes even those tiny shotgun houses. They have no say in these matters and this will give them a voice. What will their home or building look like?

They will be able to use creative problem solving as they work together in small groups to create their vision of homes and buildings...a community that they envision and someday one that they might actually be a part of making through becoming an architect, draftsman, builder, interior designer, or urban planner.

At the very least, it will show them through their own creativity and critical thought that they can create something they will be proud to call their own.
