My Students

My biggest challenge is school supplies. When choosing between food and school supplies, families have to feed their children. My goal for ALL of my students is to be academically and socially successful. This project will help me reach my goal for my students. Many of my students are visual and kinesthetic learners. They learn best by creating and being engaged.

Most of my students are considered at-risk students, and they are from low income, transient families.

50% of the students in our school district receive free or reduced-price lunches. 20% of the students are considered homeless. 65% of the students are living in homes with financial need. I teach at a Title I school. My students are awesome, creative, and enthusiastic about learning. They make me want to be a better teacher. They wake up every day, hoping that this day will be better. They are optimistic that, through education, they will break the chains of their current life situations. Many come to class without pencils, paper, or other supplies. Through donations, my students can have the school supplies they need in order to achieve the education that will allow them to have a brighter future.

My Project

Envision students sitting at tables. Each student has their own five subject notebook, different sheets of colored paper, scissors, glue, colored pens, and map pencils. Students are creating their STAAR interactive student notebooks, which will contain all the information they will need to be successful not only as we learn about each era of history but most importantly on the STAAR exam in eighth grade American history.

Each student will be engaged in the learning process by using their creativity in each era of history when creating the sections in their notebooks using the information they learn throughout the year.

One section will be for student notes and foldables to help them retain the information they have learned. It is this section that students will show their creativity through writing and illustrations. Another section will contain information related to the required TEKS for the STAAR exam (facts and strategies). Remaining sections will include detailed information on the key people, places, and events of American history, plus the newly acquired vocabulary terms that the students must know to be successful on the STAAR exam. By creating each page of their interactive student notebooks themselves, they will be ready by the time they take the exam. My students will have the CONFIDENCE that they need to be successful. Confidence is a key factor in being successful on the STAAR exam.
