Creativity and Critical Thinking Through a Maker Space Room!

My Students

My students are a diverse collection of learners. The common thread they share is that traditional schools weren't working out for them and they needed something different, an alternative. Many of our students come from low-income or poverty stricken families. Others have chaotic lives full of inconsistent people and uncertainty. Because of those challenges, most students have had little or no recent academic success. Some give up or barely try. Other's have so little confidence from having lack of success, that they just accept that they are bad students, resigning themselves to failure. For most students, this starts to change when they join our school.

My students shine when given the attention and consistency they need, and the opportunities to learn new skills or gain new knowledge in an environment they find safe.

Despite many of these students having large gaps in their knowledge, they start to find some success and build up their confidence. That success leads to more success, and most students start to get momentum going that carries them to graduation. Over the years I've been fortunate enough to watch many young people go from struggling student about to drop-out, to accomplished student, to high school graduate.

My Project

The maker space room is a student led area where students feel a sense of independent learning. I feel the addition of Dell monitors to complement the computers will enhance creativity with in that room.

Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.

I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a place to create and explore. They almost always make good choices, are more engaged, and get more work completed when given this opportunity.

The much needed monitors will only expand creativity and critical thinking through the use of a maker space room. What a great addition this will be!
