Our school is in Oak Park, IL, which is an ethnically and socio-economically diverse fringe suburb just west of Chicago. Some of our students come from families with rich educational backgrounds and other come from families with none.
As a result, our district suffers from a fairly wide digital-divide at home.
Our school fills this divide with one-to-one Chromebooks and a rich curriculum that provides most of them with technology-infused experiences for limited amounts of time. Our library is at the heart of that - or is at least getting there.
We have a very limited budget for materials - especially technological ones. Our library needs 21st century materials to make sure all of our students have more consistent opportunities to learn with - and from - these materials.
My Project
Our students need equal access to 21st century materials. This 3D printer will be used by all students as part of whole classes, small groups, or individually.
Students, of all ability levels, will have the opportunity to access this printer to be creative, think critically, and bring their imaginations to life.
Currently, our special education students don't have the opportunity to attend design classes where they would encounter this incredible technology. Having this printer in the library would help bridge that divide.
This printer would be used as an extension of the curriculum for any and all classrooms, such as making game pieces for Civil War games created by students.
