Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a dual language school English/Spanish in the South Bronx. Though we are a public school we are a uniform school. Though we are a Title One school where one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunch, we are rich in spirit, motivation, culture, diversity and have a tremendous love for the arts! Our students thrive on art and creativity having won PS Art representing the greatest artists of public NYC school, they are winners of the Bronx Borough Arts festival representing Grand Concourse and most recently, nine of our eighth graders have made it into the permanent collection of the Bronx Museum having collaborated with a renown Bronx artist. Our students thrive on art finding it an invaluable source of inspiration. They tremendously appreciate all the materials they are given that they would otherwise not receive if it were not for our generous donors. They crave and so deserve quality art materials.

My Project

My students would greatly benefit from having an opportunity to create art all day and everywhere they carry their sketchbook. When they have a sketchbook in hand they draw and write what comes to mind. While thinking creatively they also have a personal connection to owning a sketchbook, they get to draw and write what they feel as an outlet for expression as well as develop deeper understanding of drawing and writing skills.

Fostering creativity and encouraging continuous thoughtfulness, our students crave the opportunity to be expressive, draw from observation, from their imaginations and write down what comes to mind.

Having a sketchbook will make a huge difference in our students' creative thought process and development. At our school we truly believe that thinking creatively applies to all aspects of learning. We want to further develop and nourish creative thinking and know that sketchbooks will provide this opportunity.
