Creativity Alive Again With STEM Bins

My students need STEM materials including plank sets and Tinker Toys to promote creative thinking in the classroom.

My Students

My students are kind, excited, curious learners. They are a diverse group. Many come from low economic homes therefore all students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch. We also have ESL students. This year my amazing first graders were so accepting of one another. They encouraged each other, taught each other and cared for each other. The class helped our ESL student who arrived in the middle of the year speaking no English. They guided him through our routines and included him in their friendships. Several of my students move multiple times a year and they could relate to being the “new kid”. I admire their compassion and kindness

My Project

STEM Bins encorage children to think creatively, work cooperatively, develop social skills, and use problem solving skills. I would like to replace morning worksheets with manipulatives and materials for STEM bins. Currently, students come in the classroom and silently completely a worksheet. There is little to no interaction with classmates. Some students finish the worksheet early and others not at all. Often I do not have time to review the sheet to check for understanding. STEM Bins will be much more beneficial and meaningful for students. The Planks, K’nex, Lincoln Logs, and Tinker Toys will allow my students to be more engaged, creative and interactive. I am so excited for my students to receive these materials so they can be creative and become excited about learning each morning. What a great way to start each day!
