Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The bulk of this gift will directly support new writers to our schools' four year creative writing program. Our goal is to build and develop not only writing skills, but the passion and voice of each writer. We want students to begin to identify as writers and to feel compelled to share themselves as storytellers, poets, and memoirists.

These resources will go directly to students who are creating visual displays to showcase their creative writing portfolios to the wider community.

The event itself consists of student work displayed alongside powerful visual displays meant to invite non-readers into the world of our students' writing. Alongside these displays, brave students step on stage and perform their works for a sizable crowd (we had nearly 200 guests last year) in our schools' black box theater.

Other donations here will be connected to our second event of the year - the poetry slam. The individual poetry books will be used as prizes for students who are courageous enough to perform their slam poetry before a panel of judges. For both of these events our students spend class time designing and planning the event - that is where the trifold boards and many of the decorative items are needed. We love to encourage students to spend a large amount of time creating visual companion pieces for their writing. Not only do we believe it invites people to engage with their work in a new way - it helps our students internalize the value of their own work. Spending several weeks crafting a visually rich display helps give them a more significant appreciation for the value of their own writing. We want them to identify as writers with pride.
