This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are creative and artistic. They love to write poems that reflect their experiences about life. Poetry provides them with an outlet to express themselves through these very traumatic and difficult times.
Poetry writing allows my students to use self-expression to dream, stay positive, and release negative ideations while learning the different forms of poetry and their poetic devices.
My Project
This project will assist my students with their social-emotional well-being during a time where my students have experienced trauma/social upheaval due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, due to the omicron variant, I have several students out sick. This has created a lot of anxiety in the students who are showing up in my class - fear of infection and/or fear for a friend, who is out sick. These materials will be used in a classroom setting.
These projects will support my high school students in their understanding of poetic devices and different forms of poetry.
In addition, these projects offer students an outlet for self-expression and healing. Students will also be incorporating artwork/photography within these projects that assist them in connecting to their poetry through visualization/art.
