My Students

What if the future Academy Awards winners were sitting in my classroom, but didn't have the means to create their masterpieces?

I teach at an urban middle school in southern California.

Most of my students are considered at-risk simply because of where our school is located. The high school next door currently has a 50 percent dropout rate. My students have confided that they are surrounded by gangs in their neighborhoods and drugs are easily accessible. However, they leave all of that at the door to come into my class to learn something new. My students are motivated, intelligent and willing to learn. They are inspired and inspiring. They make going to work everyday a joy.

My Project

I am requesting art supplies such as;construction paper, scissors, colored markers and pencils so students can make creative design projects and explore their potential in the "behind the scenes" art of Theatre Arts. We will explore all dimensions of designing for a play; set designs, costume renderings, prop renderings, posters for advertising the production, and so on. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore the artistry, that takes place "off stage". We do not have a Visual Arts program at my school (it was eliminated with the recent budget cuts), so it also allows students who don't have any other outlet a place to express their creativity in this area. Our school has had to make the crucial decision to either spend money on classroom supplies or on funding teacher positions. We've decided that students will benefit most with having lower class sizes and more teachers, but that leaves our classes (especially the electives) with no money for supplies.

I believe that by supporting this project you may help one of my students discover their potential in design, graphic arts, or advertising.

It could just be the spark they need to keep them going and continue on to a high school, instead of becoming another statistic in the dropout rate. I truly believe that keeping the Arts alive is really leaving no child behind. I believe by funding this project you are making a difference in closing the achievement gap and keeping kids from dropping out.
