Creative Solutions & Computer Programming = INFY Makers

My students need 3 OSMO Genius Kit systems to develop technology awareness and computer programming skills.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. H.'s classroom raised $399

My Students

I am not a computer programmer and I do not play one on TV. I did not sleep in a Holiday Inn Express but I am all that my kids have to put them on the path to tech literacy. My ELL students want to participate in the Infy Maker Awards Program and I want to help them.

I work with a creative group of 4th and 5th grade ELL students who have no access to technology outside of school.

Our K-6 school is and older, urban public school which is adjacent to two military bases. It is deemed high poverty. Over 60% of my students are eligible for free and reduced breakfast and lunch but we do not qualify for Title 1. My students are very diverse and many of my wonderful students are deemed at-risk. Our student population is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. After learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. recently, my students began to talk about the need to dream of a better life. They want to participate in the Infy Maker Awards Program. I want to help them. They need something simple to begin their journey. They need OSMO systems which our school cannot afford.

My Project

My library has a couple iPads that do not get much use during recess. I want to change that by establishing a grade 4-5 computer programming lunch bunch. I am starting at a very basic level. I am the school librarian who encourages the integration and use of technology but I am not a programmer. I am requesting 3 OSMO systems. I took a workshop recently and learned that the OSMO system would/could be a way for my students to learn to problem solve and create with the tools and materials that we already have. The system has different levels of learning tasks that enhance creativity and problem solving. As I envision it, my students could use the OSMO to develop their computer and technology skills. They would also develop their math and literacy skills while creating drawings and learning programming skills.

Our school has absolutely no money for any type of resource for my kids who want to learn computer programming so they can participate in the Infy Maker Awards Program.

OSMOs will allow my students to explore technology, develop deeper thinking skills and begin computer programming. Please help them achieve their dream.
