My Project
My students come from first through fifth grades from three Middle Georgia area schools. They are innovative gifted learners who love to think outside the box. Generally, these kiddos get overlooked when it comes to new, fancy stuff in school because it goes to the kids who need extra help the most---and that doesn't describe my students. On a limited budget, I try to give my students a high-quality gifted education experience that is fun, exciting, and definitely outside of what they experience when they are in their general education classes.
Something as simple as offering creative seating options can give my students a unique experience that not only encourages their attendance and participation, but also helps them get their creative juices flowing!
When I think back on my elementary school days, being comfortable in class was not considered necessary for students to come to school, pay attention, or do their best work. Jump a few decades ahead, though, and teachers now need to use every tool in their toolboxes to coax those out of their students. Having seats with wheels, using yoga balls as chairs, and letting students sit at low tables or complete work on carpeted floor would have been as fun back then as it is now.
If I want to foster a growth mindset and independent, creative thinking in my super smart students, I need to provide an atmosphere that is just as extraordinary as they are. Help me give my kids an atmosphere outside the norm in which they can develop their problem solving, learn advanced content, and grow into the innovative little geniuses I know they can be!
