My Students

Sitting for seven hours a chair is unnatural behavior. It is a challenge for most adults. For a wiggly ten year old, is is nearly impossible. I want to create a more responsive classroom where more of my diverse, high needs students needs are met.

My students are creative, clever and kind.

We work together to establish a place we can go to feel safe and be secure each day. We are a public, high needs, suburban school with a strong sense of community. I work with amazing teachers who bring their best and most creative selves to work each day. We want to create unique learning opportunities that embrace teamwork, creativity, technology and real-world applications. I want to provide my students with all the resources they need to be successful learners in the classroom.

My Project

My students will use these materials in all areas of learning. By providing new and flexible seating options, all my students will have the opportunity to learn in the ways that they work best. Some kids find working at a traditional desk and chair but many are not. By adding ball chairs, students who need more movement will have an opportunity to feel more successful at their desk. Lap desks will allow my students to spread out and work on the floor. The convertible bench with increase flexibility in our room and provide students with both a comfortable place to read as well as a table to collaborate at. New stools for our tall tables will make our classroom safer and more stylish. These materials can radically change what my classroom looks like and how it functions on a day to day basis.

If my students are given the opportunity for more choice in their learning positions, their chances for success explode!

Tom Hunter from the National Association for the Education of Young Children writes that "sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." I hope to honor my students and their abilities to create and grow through new seating choices.
