Do you remember learning to read? You looked at the illustrations as you read and began to understand the story by interacting with the art in the book. Did you listen to great stories as your teacher read them with a variety of voices?
My students don't have the advantages many students have.
I teach at a Title 1 school in Oklahoma. Almost 70% receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students read well below grade level. They are excited to come to school each day and learn something new. Being able to use art to enrich our reading instruction will be a real benefit for them.
My Project
My students love to be read to in class. Most don't have a big selection of books at home. Being able to make books come alive by adding art projects to our lessons will get them more excited about learning to read. If I had more supplies they would be able to make sack puppets to help them perform readers theater. They would be able to make superhero capes when we read about superheroes. They could make dioramas and collages. The ideas are unlimited but our funds and supplies are. Help me make learning to read more exciting for these beginning readers by adding art to their reading instructions.
Making students love learning and coming to school when they are young is very important.
Adding arts and crafts to our reading instruction will keep them excited and engaged. Help my students love learning by helping with this project.
