Playing make-believe is one of the hi-lights of the Pre-K class. My students love to pretend to be Mommies and Daddies, Doctors, Nurses, Singers, Princesses and even Spider Man. They are full of imagination and can use any object as props.
My students are 4 years of age and are excited about being in Big School.
Our school is located in Louisiana and is a Charter School which is committed to nurturing and encouraging creativity in all the arts. My students enjoy playing in the Dramatic Play Area of our classroom. There they can dress up, cook, grocery shop, and even build things to enhance their play. Our school is in a high poverty area with more than 99% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. The families of the students have endured several challenges from Hurricanes, floods and oil spills.
My Project
One of the best ways children have to express themselves is through creative dramatic play. In our classroom the Dramatic Play Area is one area in which students are able to freely express their inner feelings. It occurs daily in the lives of preschoolers, as they imitate the people in their world. It helps them understand and deal with the world. My students will love to have this set of multi-cultural dolls to add to the Dramatic Play Area. These dolls will teach them that there are cultural differences as well as similarities in families throughout the world. Also, the dress up clothes will enhance their creativity as they role play. Role playing family happenings, everyday activities such as a visit to the doctor, store or bank stimulates creative thinking and is a good way to help children see the viewpoints of others, help them explore their own feelings, and handle their emotions.
My students will enjoy dressing up and playing with these dolls as they learn to express their feelings, promote pride in themselves and their culture and learn to appreciate the many cultures in our community and our world.
