My Project

My students all have different needs, skills, and abilities. As a special education teacher, I have learned that students need more than the traditional supplies in a classroom and have done an excellent job advocating for themselves in requesting different ways to express their creative outlets.

The students have daily prompts to encourage expressive writing and would enjoy the ability to bring it to life through color and art.

Our goal is to commit our basic reading skills to memory through the use of more creative and hands-on art activities. We will use coloring pencils, markers, and crayons to bring to life the sounds we are learning. Journaling can be a very creative way to inspire students to enjoy reading, and writing and deepen their thought process. This was something we tried this school year and the students took off with it. They love using the art supplies on their journal and reading lessons. One thing they wanted to add in was the use of playdough in instruction. I found this was an interesting tactic for hands on learning but know that it would serve my kinesthetic learners well.

Another part of this project is utilizing a few different games that inspire constructive thinking, working memory, and strategy. Students need a way to channel all of their extra energy when doing classwork, so they can truly absorb the material being taught. The organizational bins are to help the students have a sense of ownership in how the classroom is organized. They will also be used to sort out the crafts, and provide a place for their journals to be kept, in an effort to keep our classroom clean and safe.
