Creative Literature to Inspire Creative Writers

Help me give my students a variety of books to inspire writing, including The Idea Jar, Little Red Writing and Ralph Tells a Story.

My Students

We have such a diverse group of kids at my school. This year I am moving from a reading specialist position back to a full time 3rd grade classroom position. The students come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide variety of interests!

We have many basics, but I am working to get all of the additional items that will help our classroom be a warm, welcoming place.

When they came back to school, my students wrote down their hopes and dreams! What they wrote shows what a great, diverse bunch of kids they are. Some are eager to learn multiplication, some want to make new friends, some want to be engineers. Others are dreaming of learning new games at recess.

My dream for them is that all of their dreams come true.

My Project

We dedicate our writing time every Monday to creative writing. The kids get to explore fun writing ideas and have fun with their writing.

The books in this proposal are selected because they are designed to inspire creative writing.

In education, we sometimes call books like these "mentor texts". They are books that we can use to help teach the literacy skill. Having these books to read to the kids will help inspire them to expand their creative writing. Students can see the characters in the books, many of whom are kids like themselves, develop into writers. This will help boost their confidence and give them ideas.
