About My Students
At our urban high school, we are struggling to get our STEM program established. A dedicated student committee, Tyjoleer, Tyonna, Sade, Logan and Shamere, is trying to get donations to build a solid foundation of learning which can impact my fellow students, staff and community family members as well. We want to have a classroom lab and an outdoor learning center which will be our new STEM activity areas where the learning potential will be greatly increased. Our school does not have the technology we need to be more successful in life. We want to help ourselves, but we also want to help our community too. We are the future here, and we want to make school a positive experience for everyone.
As one of the students who will benefit from getting 3-D doodle pens, I will describe how we learn in class. It is not through notes or teachers constantly talking. We learn by doing, especially when we have hands on learning. Most of our teachers do not teach in this style because they don't have money from the school or their own money to buy items for our classes. These pens can let our imaginations become reality and it can give us the chance to explore in different subject areas. This is the twenty-first century, not the 1900's. We want to make teams to combat misunderstanding and poor communication. Through the doodle pen activities, we will practice increased social skills to resolve differences among ourselves. Also, we want to complete projects which will help us on Keystone tests that we have to pass in the spring.
In Their Own Words
Our student committee wants to design and build new areas of learning within our school. We believe it will begin with 3-D doodle pens which will be used with our new 3-D printer in the STEM classroom we are helping to build for us and future students. In addition, we want to use these pens to help create plans for future programs such as garden beds, new structures to build outside and project based learning skills to increase our academic skills.
We want to be role models for not only other students at our school, but we want to become role models for younger students in the middle and elementary schools.Families will be able to access our labs after school is over for the day to help create projects. We are the new leaders in our neighborhoods, so we can shape our own destiny. We can't allow outside or inside negative forces to become obstacles. Doodle pens will help us learn more and we will spread this learning to many who come to our school.
Our community has few resources. We have challenges to meet very day like hunger, mental illness, poverty, violence and crime. We want to rise out this environment like a phoenix from the ashes. We want to get a quality education on our path to college. Many students and their families have little to provide for their children in the field of technology. If we create a culture of learning through technology, we will reach the stars and our maximum potential. Our principal tells us that "Education is Liberation".
