Creative Hands-On Recess

My Project

My students are super-creative and love solving problems with hands-on activities. They love building, creating, and sharing their creations with classmates and families. With COVID being a part of nearly their entire school experience, I have found that they really enjoy partner and group work, but also struggle with the challenges that come from working in groups. As a result, I have worked to incorporate opportunities to practice the skills necessary to be able to work together.

I have found that even during unstructured play time, students are drawn to working together, and struggle in many of the same ways they do with group work.

Being able to brainstorm ideas and listen to one another when working or playing together are skills that they can continue to practice, even during recess or earned free time. The building activities that I have chosen can allow students to continue to learn and to practice these life skills in a way that is fun and motivating. In addition, my students really struggle with automaticity of basic math facts. Fact families are a concept that they have continued to struggle with and the fact family tools will bring increased understanding of how addition and subtraction are related and how those relationships can help solve word problems.
