Creative Group Problem Solving: Together We Can Do It!

Help me give my students the opportunity to work collaboratively with each other and gain in-person group problem solving skills to help them overcome challenges with cooperative decision-making, communication, interpersonal skills, and teamwork.

My Students

This is my second year teaching at this academy. Last school year it was all virtual so I didn't get to meet and get to know my students in the way I'm used to and wanted to, however, this school year we are full go and I have students in my classroom and I'm so glad I finally get to physically meet and interact with them!

I've learned during my first in-person school year at this academy that my students come from many walks of life and are skilled in many of the same ways yet also in very different ways too.

My students are inquisitive, curious, active, determined, eager, and excited about learning computer science and I want to deliver that learning to them! My students love a variety of different activities from learning about Google Docs, coding on Code.org, learning how to make a website, and hands-on problem solving type activities as well. My students want to be engaged with fun and flexible computer science/STEM content, and most of all they want to be challenged!

My Project

I'm excited about the possibility of bringing these amazing Lakeshore Learning resources to my classroom and my students. Since the pandemic began, students have been challenged in ways that many never thought they would. Many of the lessons taught since early 2020 will be valuable as these young students move through school, however, there have been many lessons, skills, and strategies that have been either hard to implement over distance learning or completely neglected altogether. I want to bring back the valuable lessons of working collaboratively as a team to my students and the problem solving STEM Kits and Learn to Code File Folder Games that I have selected will help me accomplish that.

Computer science, teamwork, and problem solving go hand-in-hand with each other, and these resources will allow for me to not only get my students working together in collaborative groups, but they will also help my students gain the confidence and skill of persevering through a challenging problem in order to solve it.

Through the Folk Tale, Fairy Tail, Famous Inventors, and Learn to Code games my students will be able to work together to solve challenging problems. Through these kits, they will be able to glean from each other how each one of them approaches a problem, perseveres through it, and at the same time they will learn valuable computer science lessons that will help them as they move to other challenging computer science content like making apps and websites.

My goal with these Lakeshore Learning problem solving STEM kits and Learn to Code File Folder Games is to bring back the collaborating and group work that was lost during distance learning. I hope I can be provided with the chance to that!
