This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fourth grade classroom in Ohio is comprised of approximately forty-two amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free breakfast and lunch.

It is important to me they are afforded a classroom environment which promotes learning and well-being.

The learning environment that I hope to create for my students is one that inspires them to succeed and supports them every step of the way. My fourth grade students come to school each day, often times bringing their home lives with them. I spend a great deal of time throughout the year, creating a strong sense of classroom community. My students not only rely on me to support them in their learning and serve as a positive role model in their lives, but they have come to rely on one another through the positive relationships they have formed.

My Project

The purpose of this project is to expose my students to the elements of drama. The On Stage: Theater Games and Activities for Kids will teach my students basic drama skills such as improvisation, role-playing, stage direction and characterization. The Readers Theater plays will involve students in reading aloud. They will perform through the reading of scripts. The Dress-up Role play costume set, Community Hat collection and fake mustaches will help bring out the actor in each child!

Students will engage in the elements of drama thus directly connecting to academic standards.

These activities will encourage cooperative learning and listening skills. Research suggests that students who have access to quality art education become more well-rounded students, and often perform better academically. Theater in particular, has strong connections to reading fluency and comprehension. I am excited to see how this project impacts my students' educational experience.
