Help me give my students an opportunity to use engineering and coding to further creative design thinking.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Croft's classroom raised $326
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students are curious and lively. My fourth-grade classroom is a place of discovery. I am constantly seeking ways to engage and challenge my group of gifted learners. My goal is to prepare my students to think critically and solve problems. Many of the students in our school receive free lunch due to their socioeconomic status. This lack of resources can limit the experiences students have. I hope to provide engaging materials to broaden their outlook on life and their future. Science is everywhere in the world around us, and I hope to provide opportunities to incorporate STEM into our classroom in order to prepare my students for their future careers.
My Project
My students helped me choose these materials to kick off our Creative Design Robot Makers Challenge. This project has already enabled them to take charge of their own learning and design a project to show their learning. They are so motivated to put the Energy and Motion standards they have been learning about into action! Making sure students have a say in the way they show their learning is important to me. The students in my class will be using their creative design skills to engineer and code a robot.
Even reading the most engaging science text is not as powerful as a hands on experience.
Students will use the Ozobots to engineer a creative design robot. Design thinking is a process in which students solve complex problems with creative thinking. The ability to engineer innovative solutions is a lifelong skill.
Students will use the craft materials (pompons, paper, markers) to create a robot that will move along the Ozobot tracks. The students will use the Chromebooks we already have to code the Ozobots. Students have been busy learning Scratch, a programming language, through Google CS. Students will use the headphones to be able to code in quiet and without distracting others. Also, they like to keep some of the aspects of their project as a surprise while they test it. The headphones are instrumental in keeping the sound portion of their project a secret!
Every day when I ask students what was memorable about our day, they talk about this Creative Design Unit. They are connecting to it because they have had elements of choice and creative thinking. Thank you for supporting these amazing students on their learning journey.
