My students need black and color ink, velcro fasteners, and laminating sheets to adapt the general curriculum and create our own creative curricula.

My Students
Every child deserves access to rigorous, standards-based curriculum across all subjects: language arts, math, science, and social studies. For most children, the school-provided curriculum works just fine. For children with significant developmental disabilities, well, that's a different story!
My students are a delightful group of 9 "tweens" and young teenagers attending a large urban middle school in California.
They love working in the garden, hanging out with friends at lunch, running, jumping, and just generally having a good time! They also all have developmental disabilities, including autism and Down syndrome.
While every student in the class is working to achieve their full potential, we do have a wide range of skill levels and support needs. Some students are working on recognizing letters of the alphabet, while other students read at a 2nd grade level. Some students use spoken language to communicate, while others use gestures, vocalizations, and symbols.
My Project
With a year's supply of Epson black and color ink, we can modify the existing curriculum and create innovative new curricula for our wildly diverse classroom of learners. Instead of boring black and white, students will be able to learn about current events, scientific phenomena, and so much more in vibrant color. In addition, our beginning communicators (children who are still learning that symbols have meaning) need high-definition, realistic color symbols to learn.
With four big boxes of Velcro tape, we can create accessible worksheets, books, and activities. Velcro tape ensures that these activities are re-usable and flexible by allowing us to mix and match parts to fit the needs of each student.
We want our creative curricula to last for years and be used by as many students as possible. Stocking up on laminating sheets will allow us to preserve these valuable materials!
In a classroom where each student is working at an entirely different grade level from every other student, having the tools to differentiate the curriculum is essential.
In addition, this project will help provide standards-based curriculum and creative adaptations to children with significant cognitive and communicative disabilities.
With budget cuts at an all time high, we need your support now more than ever!
