Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students will exercise compassion by combining hands on art with tech tools, enhance their learning and creating projects that practice building empathy for others. The goal of our history classes is to learn about the past to bring positive change to the present/future. Connecting to more vulnerable members of our community is a great way for them to practice civic duty and leadership.

We will be creating cards and posters for veterans and seniors at nursing homes for the holidays.

We will learn about the dangers of socially isolated adults being susceptible to depression, especially during the holidays. We will talk about moments where we've felt loneliness and imagine that as an older person. We will learn about societies where older members are respected and involved in all aspects of the social order. Students will think of ways having older people in our lives benefit us. Students will be provided volunteer opportunities to further their involvement with veterans hospitals and nursing homes.

After the activity, I will ask my students what they learned about being compassionate and if their view of being involved in their community has altered at all. I will ask if this activity has made them more likely to interact with older adults in the future.
