Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and have a diverse set of emotional needs. What they see and hear at school can make a difference in the success they experience. I want my students to demonstrate compassion through kind messages. Creating notes of kindness for others will teach them to see the world through the eyes of people different from themselves.
This project will be a kind-message station in the classroom where students can create their own greeting cards to encourage friends, classmates and other people in their lives.
I want to teach my students to be compassionate by giving them an opportunity to share kind words with each other. I will introduce the project by having students define compassion. Then we will identify examples of opportunity for compassion. I will ask students to see the world through the eyes of another and give examples of people and situations that could benefit from a compassionate message. Our goal is to alleviate suffering.
This card crafting station will have suggestions of what messages can uplift and who they can send the messages to. There will be colorful paper, pens and pencils for making handmade greeting cards. The colorful envelopes will make delivering the messages fun and polished!
As more and more cards are distributed, students will see the impact of their actions.
Students can deliver the cards on their own, or put them in the mailbox for the teacher to deliver at another time. Sometimes we will even have more space devoted to making large posters with postitive messages that we can post around the campus, attached to walls, windows and doors with the blue tape.
