My Project
A comfortable, collaborative, and organized workspace will allow students to engage more in their learning and improve efficiency during speech and language therapy. As a speech language teacher, my job is to help students with disabilities access the curriculum by improving their communication skills which include listening, speaking, reading and writing. Many of my students have learning disabilities such as speech or language impairments, attention deficits, autism, and/or cognitive impairments. As a result, it is very difficult for them to maintain focus and attention during learning tasks. A big part of intervention is the reliance on strategies, tools, and manipulatives that will improve their ability to remain focused and try their best. A sturdy table with a fun dry erase tabletop will improve comfort and attention in the tasks. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. Another big part of speech therapy intervention is making sure the therapy is effective and strategically organized to maximize the time devoted to the treatment tasks. Having an organized room with lesson plans and worksheets ready in advance is essential to the flow and the success of the speech therapy sessions. For this reason, I am also requesting a paper center to organize worksheets for each therapy group and a supply center where students can easily grab materials needed to work. I have seen what a difference convenience and organization makes in speech therapy and I hope that these additional tools will improve our sessions even more!
