Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Throughout the school year, we discuss books, create art, and share our stories with one another. Art lessons in our classroom spark meaningful conversations about our identities, our aspirations and global issues.

Art emphasizes how diverse and yet how interconnected we all are!

Our all-inclusive classroom family loves reading picture books that take us to places that are familiar to us as well as new places. Books are a springboard for learning about the people, traditions, and landscapes of various regions and inspire us to create art that reflects our understanding of the diverse world we live in. The book, Ablaze with Color: A Story of Painter Alma Thomas, will be a powerful picture book biography to introduce my students to Alma Thomas, the first black woman artist to have a painting in the White House. Alma Thomas's bold and vibrant abstract paintings will be an inspiration to us! Students will use the stretched canvases to create a layered, abstract masterpiece to express their own artistic flair. Artists love experimenting with colors, shapes and textures!

Learning more about others and their cultural backgrounds is a great way to build a sense of inclusion and student engagement. Cheers to promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity in the classroom so all my students thrive.
