Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Title I public school in a multicultural diverse community. Each student is offered the opportunity to free breakfast and lunch as well as various other free services. Our school is one of seven high schools in the city, and our student population is about 2,000 children. Our school does have a high population of disengaged youth that struggle with their daily attendance, passing their academic coursework, and have two or more behavioral referrals resulting in suspension from school grounds.

Many of my students struggle to focus in the classroom due to adult responsibilities that are experienced outside of the school environment.

My students are eager and open to new experiences but they struggle making real world connections and applications into their lives. They flourish when they have new opportunities to learn various ways to be creative and to use these art tools and techniques in other areas of their lives.

My Project

The pencils, colored markers, crayons, construction paper, glue, paint and scissors are all materials that will be available for students to participate in an art studio environment. Our goal is to collaborate with academic teachers to create a meaningful space that supports the students creative processes across multiple content areas. Engaging students and allowing them opportunity to utilize various modes of learning in an art studio setting is another goal of this project. Through this collaboration we would be able to offer the students new experiences and how they could apply the artistic processes to other aspects of their life.

This project specifically targets students who struggle in their academic courses with low attendance, failing grades and negative behavior resulting in school suspensions.

So many of our students would benefit from these supplies, space and cross content collaboration by being exposed to hands on, creative art activites. By engaging the students expressive minds and encouraging their hands to be creative the students will build confidence and find more success which would allow them to become more engaged in their own learning.
