Creative Art Adventures for Students With Special Needs
My students need new aprons to wear during Creative Arts class and high-quality watercolor paints, markers, canvas shapes, craft projects and drawing paper.
My amazing students are in the Functional Skills program at my high school and range in age from 9-12th grade and Post-High which serves students ages 18-22 with moderate to severe disabilities. My students have varying degrees of disabilities but they all have an interest in and would benefit from hands-on, creative and exciting art projects.
Despite their learning or intellectual disabilities, my students are incredibly talented and love to create arts and craft projects.
They love to paint, draw, color, trace and explore new arts and crafts projects. They always put forth their very best effort and take great pride in their art projects. The smiles on their faces when they finish a challenging project is what keeps me motivated as an educator. Their artwork may look different from the art being produced in a traditional high school art class, but to me and to their families, they are true artistic masterpieces!
My Project
The goal of this grant is to purchase basic arts and crafts supplies for the Creative Arts class, a newly created collaboration between the 9-12th grade Functional Skills students and the Post-High program at my high school serving students ages 18-22 with moderate to severe disabilities. The Creative Arts class will serve approximately 10-12 students ages 14-22 and will focus on allowing these students to explore their creativity through individualized, ability-appropriate arts and crafts lessons. The supplies requested in this grant include 12 aprons (because art is messy!), drawing paper, PipSqueak markers (for smaller hands), watercolor paints and high-quality paper, cardstock, blank cards, canvas shapes and wiggle eyes. It also includes several single craft kits such as Lightcatchers and blank puzzles. These basic supplies will provide my students with several months worth of fun art lessons and opportunities to explore their creative potential. The 12 requested aprons will be in use for years to come.
