Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With the pressures of state and district testing it is crucial for ALL student to have the opportunity to be successful in something. For some, their strengths are in reading and math, for others it is in the arts the most underfunded area in education.
Our school is located in the suburbs of a major city, where our students represent many different cultures.
My students are exposed to art in many ways from rap music to graffiti on the buildings around them. Some celebrate holidays with traditional dance and music. Art is found around them if they know where to look. At home, my students do not have access to materials to create on their own. Many do not have crayons or even chalk to draw on the sidewalk. First graders need to explore the world around them. They need to touch it, see it, smell it. They need an acceptable way to express themselves.
My Project
I am asking for paint brushes and some basic art supplies, wiggly eyes, buttons etc. I want my students to have the opportunity to express themselves through art. To create a center where they can go and design a project of their choice. One that uses everyday things that they may learn to see in a different way. "Creation Station" a place to go to express yourself, where it is alright to be different. A place where everyone is successful for at least one short part of their day.
All students need to feel successful regardless of their abilities.
Some don't like art, but others need it like we all need air to breathe. We teach our students to eat healthy and take care of their bodies but yet we let a part of their brains starve. Thank you for helping to keep our brains alive!
