My Students
I work in a high needs, urban public school with students who have a variety of special needs. My role as a school based therapist allows me to work with some of the most amazing kids who have to work extra hard just to make it through a typical school day.
My students have many special talents, but with diagnoses such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance, their special needs are often what gets the most attention.
I hope that with your help, they can overcome their deficits so that their strengths can help them shine to others the way they shine for me!
My Project
My role as a school-based occupational therapist allows me to work with some of the most amazing students. They are bright, motivated, and full of energy. Despite this, they are often in trouble with their peers and teachers because they are unable to sit still, control their impulses, read social cues, and follow directions.
It is my job to help ensure that these students achieve success despite their limitations, however, in this school, there is no designated space for them to get their therapy.
With a few special items such as stools, seat cushions, and portable desks, we will at least be able to give them a sense of having a real therapeutic space to work on achieving their goals.
In addition, these items will improve their posture and core stability which are imperative to them maintaining focus and executing fine motor tasks. Currently, my students have to sit on tile floors to complete their work.
Despite their challenges, students at my school have many special gifts to offer. I hope that they receive these items so that they are better able to learn and grow and achieve success!
