My students are 9-12 grade high school students from a rural community. Most of them have never taken an art class before joining my ceramics classroom. Ceramics is one of the oldest and most permanent art forms done by humans. Ceramic art work is created from the earth by taking mud/clay and transforming it completely and then making it permanent when applying intense heat by firing it in the kiln. It is a scary and exciting to make something from clay for the first time. My students embrace the challenge of ceramics everyday.
My Project
My students work really hard to learn about the construction techniques needed to build and work with clay. They are creative in constructing wonderful and complex art works out of clay. After a project is built, it is often times challenging to find the colors of glaze or underglaze to finish it and paint it the way they planned. These underglaze colors will allow my students to not only paint their project but also learn about the theory of color mixing. Some have never mixed red and yellow to get orange. Being able to use their custom mixed colors will allow them to finish their projects with the exact colors they imagined making their sculptures and creations come to life.
